Meta Tags are elements of a web page used to describe the page and allow the search engines to easily understand what the web page is about. Meta Tags are an important part of search engine indexing and it’s important that you always have your meta tags updated.
Google doesn’t use meta tags when deciding your ranking and relevancy. Google uses link popularity meaning how many links you have that are relevant linking back to your website. They also have a way to check your content for keyword density.
Yahoo and MSN both use meta tags when indexing so it’s extremely important to update them. While Google makes up probably more than 40% to 50% of the search engine traffic, MSN and Yahoo are still vital and can help you in being successful.

The description tag is important as it describes what your website is about. It is a good idea to include your keywords in your descripiton as no one really knows search engine practices completely unless you work for them. When you find that guy or gal please let me know.
